Overview
I was approached by a production company with the possibility of doing some Christmas spots for a broadcaster. They were interested in having a CG dragon that interacted with live action people. As an ultra short proof of concept (and to flex my VFX skills), I spent a day putting this quick example together.
The reptile model was downloaded from Turbo Squid, I thought it best to work with a creature that is similar to what the client was looking for, but not close enough to cause confusion over whether the character shown was the final model. I really liked the design, the little lights give it an alien feel whilst still very much being a reptile. You can purchase the model from here.
I found the footage on Pexels, I wanted something that would give something interesting in the shot for the lizard to react to whilst still allowing the lizard to be the focus of attention. I found this piece of footage and I thought it was perfect, building up the idea that the lizard was interested in the mug towering over it, only for it to be pulled away by a mysterious hand.
Unfortunately the production didn’t go ahead in the end, we were far too close to the holly-jolly season, but I’m really happy that I’m left with this little nugget of work 🙂
All of the work for this shot, from lighting and animation to compositing, was done in Blender.
