Overview

It was again time for Cardiff Quick Draw and I stepped up to the challenge. It’s a 48 hour animation competition where you’re given a prompt at the start and the next 48 hours are a crazed blur of animation madness. The prompt this time around was blend, so felt it appropriate to animate in Blender.

The concept is all centred around a vampire who loves to drink Bloody Marys, but with a slightly different recipe. The never ending hunt for new housemates called Mary is the result of our vampire’s favourite tipple.

Up to this point, I’d used Grease Pencil in Blender on a couple of projects, but not for rigged animation. While there are still some gaps (Grease Pencil is still in development), such as no ability to create rig-controlled turns, it all went pretty smoothly. I managed to create an IK system for limbs that worked pretty well, a system for swapping eye shapes and although you can’t see it, a nice looping animation for the bottom of our vampire’s cape.

Unfortunately I didn’t win the competition this time around, but I’ll get there, one day, by hook or by crook!
